Watergate Bay Hotel Beach Lofts
We adore Cornwall in every single season. A trip to Watergate Bay Hotel Beach lofts, near Newquay seemed like the perfect place to enjoy winter. We were really excited to try out the loft rooms which overlook the sea. And enjoy a weekend to relax and recuperate.

Watergate Bay Hotel is a north Cornwall version of a ski resort, for surfers. Set on a stretch of beautiful beach it’s the perfect getaway for sea-lovers everywhere.
The hotel is perfectly located with views of the crashing ocean almost constant. There’s everything you need here to park up and not leave.
If you do want to head out The Eden Project and all the attractions of Newquay are close by.
Beach Lofts at Watergate Bay Hotel, Cornwall
The Beach Lofts were built in 2019 and set slightly aside from the main hotel. They have their own parking spaces outside and a dedicated reception.
There are many benefits to these rooms but one is that you can enjoy all the hotel facilities – games room, pool, breakfast – whilst being slightly separate.

The interiors are stunning. Think large beds, swinging chairs, showers you never want to leave and lots of space.

The loft we were staying in had a children’s bedroom with three separate beds. There was also a pull out bed under the master.
We loved the bathroom with luxurious products, great shower and an amazing roll top bath in the bedroom to enjoy the bubbles and the sea from.

The main bedroom had the most spectacular sea views. As the sun rose so late in the morning during winter when we visited, we never closed the curtains. It was wonderful to wake up to the views of the sea pulling in and out and waves crashing wildly on the horizon during stormy winter days.
There was a fire, which wasn’t real but looked it. And the swinging chair had plenty of time being used with all of us taking turns to gently rock while gazing, almost transfixed out to sea.

The views were simply mesmerizing. To look out for dog walkers, swimmers, surfers and bodyboarders. The view was ever changing and hypnotic.
The lofts also have direct beach access. We had a key card to wander down straight onto the sand. And if you are into surfing there’s an outdoor hot shower and wetsuit drying room.

The lofts also have access to a pantry. You can collect breakfast here and through the day there are cakes and drinks to enjoy too. We loved this – grabbing hot chocolates and a slice of lemon drizzle cake at 3pm.
Where to eat in Watergate Bay?
There are some great choices to eat within the hotel.
Breakfast
We really enjoyed breakfast every morning at the hotel. The waffle station was particularly well thought of and they even whipped up some amazing vegan waffles.
There were fresh juices, plenty of cereals, delicious pastries and fruit salads. We enjoyed the little pots of muesli and oats.
There was everything we needed to set us up for the day.
Zacry’s, Watergate Bay Hotel
On the first night we ate at Zacry’s in the Watergate Bay Hotel. We thought the food here was fantastic.
We had starters including charred broccoli with miso whipped tofu topped with toasted cashews which was delicious. I also love the roasted parsnips with whipped feta and apple.
For main course there was a wonderful charred aubergines dish with lentil dahl, perfect for plant based diets.
The crispy coated monkfish was a real standout with katsu curry and pickles.
The children had some great trophy pasta with a tasty tomato sauce.
Beach Hut
We also ate in the Beach Hut. This is directly below the Beach Loft rooms and looks out across the sea.
This is a lovely cozy space in winter.
We tucked into starters of a fantastic chana masala, some spiced potato fritters and some focaccia.
For our main courses we have some lovely plant based burgers. The children enjoyed fish and chips and a fish finger sub.
We also had some interesting puddings including Milk chocolate and malted cream pie, St Clement’s cake and a tasty Crème brûlée.
What is there to do in winter at Watergate Bay hotel?
There is plenty to do in winter at the Watergate Bay Hotel. First, how about surfing?
Surf
The hotel is set on a fantastic surf beach and is perfectly geared up to make it as easy as possible.
I have to say I was a little apprehensive about trying to surf for the first time in late November. However I absolutely loved it.

We had lessons with Wavehunters who were brilliant. They kitted us out in wetsuits and shoes and got us down to the sea for some lessons in safety.
Then we were out. The only ones in the sea at the time, and it was raining. But it was brilliant.
I didn’t want to come back in. It was only the weariness setting in after an hour or so in the water that pulled me out of the sea. I can’t wait to try again in summer.
If you have never tried surfing before I would urge you to give it a go. Wavehunters were the perfect people with kindness and patience and fantastic teaching. They were a steady hand to show us the way.
We’ve all said we can’t wait to try it again.
swimming

While there were people swimming in the sea when we visited, Watergate Bay Hotel also has a great indoor pool. With fantastic views out across the water.
This is a lovely way to spend some family time. They also have outdoor hot tubs looking down on the beach too.
Spa

The hotel has it’s own spa. When we visited I booked in for some relaxing time to have a facial.
I loved being able to really relax, have my skin pampered and rehydrated and feel looked after.
It was ideal me-time. I also loved getting my skin treated in winter when it felt a bit dull and neglected. I loved the treatment.
Beach

Watergate Bay is such a beautiful beach. There were plenty of dog walkers and body boarders when we were there.
Because it’s so big it never feels busy. In fact there were a number of times we were the only people on it.
It’s a great beach to visit in winter. Hunt out treasures and watch the waves crash.
It’s a really atmospheric stretch of sand.
What did we think of our stay at the Watergate Bay Hotel Beach Lofts in winter?
We loved it. Winter can be a time to hibernate but actually there’s nothing better than a blast of sea air to pick things up.
Even if it’s rainy or stormy this is such an evocative part of the world. We loved our winter walks along the beach.
Equally it was lovely to turn the fire on and watch the storm clouds gathering from inside. The huge bath was an ideal winter warmer.
We had our fair share of hot chocolates and slices of chocolate and cherry cake to also give us a lift.
We loved the Watergate Bay Hotel in winter. It provided us with a real boost in what could otherwise feel like a dreamy part of the year.
We left feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. All of us commented that it felt as thought we’d been away for four or five days rather than just two.
