We spent a week skiing in Kläppen ski resort in Sweden, with a few days in Stockholm. It was the perfect combination of city break and skiing. Our days were spent having so much fun in the snow, eating homemade waffles with thick cream and taking in the beautiful Swedish mountain air around Klappen.
We love our trips skiing with kids. For us Scandinavia has always been our favorite place to ski. The people are warm and welcoming, we love the interesting food, the resorts are quiet, well taken care of and orderly. It’s the perfect combination.

Starting in Stockholm
We started our trip by flying in to Stockholm. You can fly in to Scandinavia Mountain Airport which is only about 20 minutes away from Klappen. We were keen to explore a little of Stockholm though.
We checked in to Arkaden Hotel which is a selection of lovely little apartments close to the airport. It was the ideal base with self catering facilities to ensure we could cook up our own food and plenty of space to really relax.
From here it was around a 40 minute drive to Stockholm. There were plenty of public transport options too.
We didn’t have long in Stockholm but we loved what we saw. A beautiful city with the Söderström river gliding through the centre.
The Vasa Museum
We visited the Vasa Museum which actually took my breath away.
This 17th Century shipwreck was pulled from the bottom of the sea in the 1960s and is amazingly intact. It reminded me of visiting Pompeii where what you see transports you to the past so distinct that you almost can’t believe it’s true.
The amount of detail in the carving was incredible. It was possible to really imagine people walking along the deck, gun ports thrown open, the crows nest at the top roughly and dizzyingly dipping up and down.
We absolutely loved our time at the Vasa. Such a wonderful insight into the past.
Cinnamon buns and shopping
The rest of our time was wandering through Stockholm. We shopped for clothes and homewares – candles and plant pots.
We went to the sweetest bakery and brought a huge tear and shared cinnamon bread that was delicious.
Stockholm left us wanting more and we will definitely be back to explore again.
driving north
We then headed on the long drive north. Sweden is beautiful to drive through and the scenery is stunning.
Watching deep red barns and the pretty pink sky passing us by helped the five and a half hour journey pass quicker.
A week of skiing at Klappen Ski resort
Klappen Ski Resort is a beautiful ski center which is family owned. Started by Father Per in 1982, today it is a fantastically family friendly place to ski.
The slopes are wide and it never feels busy, even though we were skiing at Kläppen during the February half term week.
The children were able to go off by themselves and we could all meet at the restaurant in the middle for hot chocolates and huge cookies.
The youngest loved the two mascots, Troll and Troll who would ski down the children’s slopes regularly. They also put on shows and provided lots of fun around the resort.
stay at Sälens Högfjällshotell
For the first half of the week we stayed about twenty minutes away at Sälens Högfjällshotell. This was a great hotel and we had interconnecting rooms to really relax.
We had a lovely breakfast each morning and had an evening meal at Jack’s BBQ which is part of the hotel. This was a fantastic evening with great food.
We would drive in from here each morning to ski at Klappen ski resort which was a nice and easy drive down the road.
Staying at Kläppen Ski resort
For the second half of the week we stayed in Klappen at the sweetest little apartment.
We loved this stay overlooking the ski runs and chair lift.
We have three bedrooms and a lovely open plan lounge and diner complete with log burner. It was so cozy but really modern and perfectly Scandi.
We would cook up big meals of fajitas and use the waffle maker for lovely mornings sat at the table in the sunshine.
It was the perfect place to stay and it also had a drying room and big ski cupboard.
We could get all kitted out and then head off out the door and straight onto the slopes. It was a great location.
Skiing in Kläppen Ski Resort
Our week skiing in Klappen was filled with so many happy memories. It was wonderful to watch the children’s skiing keep evolving.
I also love how much the kids really enjoy skiing and this is a lifetime skill and a gift for them now. They can’t imagine life without having the fun of time on the slopes in it.
Klappen is a great, family friendly resort in Sweden. Perfect or all levels of skiier. We loved it.
